StoryArt WorkshopIn this four-day workshop, fifth grade students create an illustration that tells a story. Briefly, steps include: (1) Selecting an object. Students choose from a wide variety of objects set out on a tray, such as a stamps, playing cards and small toys, that serves as inspiration for a story. They imagine what the object might represent, where it may be found, who may be present, and what might be happening. (2) Formulating a story. From their imaginings, students sketch a story onto Bristol paper. (3) Creating final artwork. Students trace over the final pencil lines with a thin black marker, and use colored pencils to add color. They write the story’s title, inspiring object, and a brief description of the characters, setting, and plot on a form. (4) The finished illustration is mounted on construction paper along side the inspiring object and story description. A celebration and art show ends the workshop.
I also create my own StoryArt, which can be viewed on this site. To view my most recent artwork, visit my blog. Here are some photos from the 2010 South Hill Elementary School StoryArt workshop: |
